Ipsy August Subscription

Standard

I’m squeaking this review into the last days of August! Can you believe September is this week!? It’s crazy!  Well, for this months Ipsy bag I wasn’t completely wowed to be honest.  It had a collection of nice things but not much I would have bought on my own.

The Bag

This month my goodies included an Absolute Lip Balm in Grape, Dr. Brandt Pores No More Pore Refiner, Urban Decay Perversion Mascara, Coastal Scents Forever Blush Duo in Fresh and Elegant, and Lord & Berry Silk Kajal Kohl Eye Pencil in 1001 Silk Black.

The Reviews!

Dr. Brandt’s Pores No More pore refining primer is up first.  I have some decent sized pores and having a product that would hide them would be nice and if it helps my makeup stay longer than all the better!

The formula is light and much like a mousse.  It goes on easily although it is a bit dark in colour so if you’re a ghost like me, you’ll need to make sure you don’t get ring around the face.

It goes on easily and doesn’t feel overly heavy on my face.  My BB cream applied well overtop and  there wasn’t any balling or creasing.  My BB cream lasted all day and didn’t become powdery looking or sink into my lines. For a primer it’s about average and it’s pore refining abilities are about the same.  This wasn’t anything I felt the desire to run out and buy but it was still a nice product to use.  I give this a 7/10 as it was a nice product but I did not feel it was anything special.

Next up is Urban Decay’s Perversion Mascara.

P1000955

My issue with this mascara, as with most of the others I am not a major fan of, is the brush.  It grabs a lot of product that then has a tendency to gob up on my lashes.  I was actually really disappointed that this did not work for me as I love Urban Decay’s products and have really liked using some of their other mascaras.  This particular one left a bit to be desired in my opinion.

Typical mascara wand, nothing really wow or different.

P1000965 Brushed out it works a bit better but still meh.

This gets a 6/10 from me.  I didn’t like the brush but the formula did not flake or smudge during the day. If I could have gotten it to go on evenly and not needed to brush my lashes out every time I used it, it would have scored a much higher grade.  Unfortunately it just didn’t work for me.

Absolute You’re the Balm lip balm.  This lip balm smells very strongly of artificial grape so keep that in mind if you are sensitive to scents or don’t like the sickeningly sweet scent of fake grape.  It looks pretty solid in the tin but it becomes super soft and applies evenly over lips.

If you look close, there are sparkles!

The balm applies clear but leaves a high gloss shine and lots of sparkles.  We’re not talking a little bit of shimmer here, we’re talking glitter sprinkled into the balm.  They add a little extra oomph to the balm if that’s something you like.

Indirect sunlight, you can really see the sparkles

I almost felt like this balm either needed to not have sparkles at all or to have more.  There weren’t quite enough for them to apply evenly and you were left with little sections that had lots of sparkles and others that had none.  The formula was a bit greasy and it sat on top of my lips but never seemed to sink in.  This balm gets a 5/10 from me.  It works nicely over lipstick for a little extra shine (although cuts wear time down considerably) and the glitter adds a little bit extra to a look.  The formula didn’t dry out my lips but I also found that it didn’t really moisturize them either.  This is probably due to the balm never really sinking in and instead just sitting on top of the lips.  Overall it was okay as a balm but I prefer my Notoriously Morbid Coffin Kissers and EOS balms.

Lord & Berry Silk Kajal Kohl Eye Pencil in 1001 Silk Black. You should see my eyeliner collection, it is starting to get a teensy bit out of control.  I swear they’re starting to breed; they must be talking to my eyeshadows and lippies, and getting ideas!

P1000958

This might’ve been the only real winner in this months glam bag.  I liked this liner quite a bit.  It was easy to use and I as able to get pretty crisp lines for a pencil liner.  The formula is a bit dryer and more pencil like than I am used to (I usually use Urban Decay liners which are very smooth and easy to apply) but I think the colour payoff makes up for that.  The formula also doesn’t transfer onto my lids like some other eyeliners do so that makes up for any dryness.

P1010007

Using the liner for the day. Nice thin, clean line!

P1010008

Later in the day, still looking strong!

This liner advertises itself as easily smudge-able to accentuate a smokey look as well as providing a crisp dark line.  I have to agree with these claims as it was very easy to blend out, while still providing a crisp, dark line.

Blended out on bottom.

This gets a 9/10.  It would have been a 10/10 had the formula been a bit creamier.  If I happen to ever run out of black eyeliner then I may pick this one up should it be available.

Finally we have Coastal Scents Forever Blush Duo in Fresh and Elegant.  Fresh is on the left of this mini palette and Elegant is on the right. I’ve heard some pretty good things about Coastal Scents but this is the first I have been able to try from them.

Fresh on the Left and Elegant on the Right.

Swatches have patted on blush (top) and blended out (bottom) and are on bare skin.  First is Fresh.  This blush has a hint of shimmer and sparkle that you can see in the second image.  It’s a light fun pink that would be a perfect spring and summer colour.

Next up are the swatches of Elegant.  This blush is a warm orange that would be nice for a formal occasion, a little less fun and cutsie than Fresh and more grownup.

Both these blushes were nice wearable colours.  They had okay pigmentation but don’t really compare if you are used to using highly pigmented blushes (like those from Fyrinnae).  I found that I had to make a couple passes to get the desired payoff but this is fine it you prefer to build up colour slowly and have a more muted look.  The colour blends well and the bit of shimmer in the colours give a nice glow.  I give these blushes a 7/10.

Final Thoughts

This months bag was just okay but that’s the risk you take with a subscription service isn’t it? Overall the products were okay, they mostly just didn’t work for me.  Everyone has their own preferences and unfortunately not many of this months products fit mine.  I’m still loving this subscription and can’t wait to see what I get next month!

(All reviews and statements are my honest personal opinions. I have purchased all the products I have written about unless otherwise explicitly stated)
